WOW - I just completed my 150th Scuba Dive at 130 feet depth, to view the stallagtites inside one of Nature's mysterious underwater caverns. The Blue Hole is a 2-3 hour boat drive south from Ambergris Caye, largest of the outer islands of the barrier reef that snakes along Belize's coastline.

During my 6 days on the ground (mostly spent in a boat), I took ten SCUBA dives (one nighttime, one very deep), 2 snorkels, a wildlife-spotting river jungle cruise, and hiked up the second highest Mayan Ruins of the Jaguar Temple, looking out 360 degrees, to see Mexico and Guatemala...

Years ago, in searching for interesting ways to meet single men, I tried singles bike rides, sierra club hikes, wind surfing, and chanced upon scuba diving. At first, my right ear gave me terrible pains as I got used to equalizing the pressure changes, but I stuck with it over my 4 week learning curve, starting in the pool, then Redondo beach, then Catalina's Casino Bay.

I completed my Open Water Certification in drizzle and freezing 5-foot chop on Halloween weekend 1987, just off the Channel Islands. I told myself, " you don't have to do this." And then I took a giant stride into the bulging chaos.

My divemaster was awesomely solidly calm and collected, looking me in the eyes the entire way down as I clenched the anchor rope, being tossed and splashed. We descended into the calmer waters below, and I became quieter too. He exuded the qualities of assurance, trust, safety-first, and quick-mindedness.

...and I became a believer. I always wanted to be an astronaut! The next year, I bought a roundtrip ticket to SouthEast Asia, put my SCUBA gear in one bag and my clothes in a backpack, and headed off with the Lonely Planet Guide in my pocket.

In that 6-week sojourn, I visited some top SCUBA sites: Phuket, Phi Phi, Koh Samui, the Andamen Islands, Bali's Pelau Menjangan, Nusa Dua, Gili Isles, and saw some of the most staggering underwater sights the world contained in those years, and in my many dives since. Unfortunately, many of the coral reefs I've visited, are now gone.

SAVE THE CORAL REEFS ~ the basis of Life on the Planet

1988: Shark Point, Thailand- We motor out at least one-hour on a longboat from Phi Phi Island with divemaster Jerry, who gimped on land and could swim like a seal, just holding his tank with no jacket. We swim down 85 feet to gawk at a dozen reef tip sharks lazily hanging out at the bottom of a long spiral pinnacle. The 2-knot current is strong enough here at this turning point, that the food just swims into their mouths. As Jerry pets some of their dorsal fins, we stay about 5-10 feet away, locked in an eye gazing daze.

1992: Molokini, Hawaii - a large green moray eel and slow pacing nurse sharks are featured in this halfmoon bay speckled with wreckage turned into fantasy gardens of fan coral, sponge varieties and schools of bright trigger, butterfly, angel and convict fish. When I am swished backwards into closeby brain coral, I inhale deeply to ascend and fly above it. When the current moves out again, I exhale to drop down, hands behind my back, letting my legs giggle behind me, getting spurted forward along with my underwater friends. Breath changes my level, and I learn to use it wisely.

1997: "The Wash" at Bogainvilla, Great Barrier Reef Australia - 8 foot reef sharks are sighted as we drift past dangerous lion fish tucked into crevices of sweeping staghorn coral teaming with life, using our "torches" (flashlight in Aussie) to see the true colors at 65-90 feet depth. The reds are "canceled" at a certain depth, and then the blues, and as you go lower, only the greens and browns are visible to the naked eye...so now you know why my photos are so monotone... I use a disposable waterproof (35 ft max), but what can really do the job is a ProCameraStrobe. See Dive Magazine for AWESOME shots!

2007: Hol Chan Marine Park, Ambergris Caye, Belize -  This is called shark/ray alley, because the divermasters come out every day, feed the fish, and they get very friendly! We pet several manta rays (see my photo), and also easily persuade a couple of nurse sharks to roll over and get their bellies rubbed while being cradled in my arms - WHEW! pretty amazing, although they seem so pedestrian about it all... if you could say so underwater.

April 27, 2007: THE BLUE HOLE of Belize - Whale sharks, reef sharks, and barracuda swim on the outskirts of our descent. Trusting Steve implicitly, I follow his bubbles into the dark dark blue and feeling the thermal, it suddenly gets colder. We have only 7 minutes to get down to 130 feet, and then take a 4 minute cruise past the TOP of a 200 foot Canvern, looking downward into a vast jungle of stallegtites + stallegmites. Then it's time to get back topside, steadily acending to our 5 minute safety stop at 15 feet. Here, we are cruised by the dominant animals of the area, and we ponder our short but exquisite journey into one of the world's marine mysteries. MY DEEPEST DIVE yet, and my 150th!
